AI is making it easier to create text, images and video in seconds. The same technology can be useful for everyday tasks while also making some forms of digital abuse easier to create and distribute.

What are AI-powered apps?

AI-powered apps are applications that use machine-learning models to generate or transform content. Depending on the product, that can include text generation, image generation, text-to-image, text-to-video, voice generation, photo editing and face swap features.

Many of these tools are genuinely useful. They can help people translate text, learn a language, create a website, edit a photo, brainstorm ideas or automate repetitive work. The problem is not AI itself. The important question is what a particular feature enables and how easily it can be misused.

Face swap: from entertainment to impersonation

Face swap is one of the clearest examples. A person can upload a photograph and replace the face in another image or video. In harmless contexts, this can be a creative effect used for entertainment, parody or visual experimentation.

The same capability becomes much more concerning when it is used without the person's consent. A malicious user could create deceptive images, impersonate someone online or place a person's face into an intimate or otherwise damaging context. Once such material is published, the person shown in it may have little control over how quickly it spreads.

Deepfakes are becoming harder to judge

Synthetic media can be convincing enough that viewers may struggle to distinguish an edited image or video from genuine footage. That creates a trust problem: a manipulated piece of content can influence what people believe before anyone has time to verify it.

This does not mean every AI-generated image or video is deceptive. It means context matters. A clearly labelled creative effect is very different from content presented as authentic evidence of a real event.

Fake identities and documents

Generative tools can also lower the effort required to create convincing-looking identities, profiles and documents. In the wrong hands, those capabilities can support impersonation, fraud or other forms of abuse.

The broader issue is not that AI suddenly invented deception. People have always manipulated information. AI can, however, make certain types of synthetic content faster and cheaper to produce at scale.

The positive side of AI

It would be a mistake to look only at the risks. For many people, AI assistants have already become useful everyday tools. They can explain difficult topics, help with translations, support language learning, answer questions, draft text, assist with programming and help people explore ideas.

Tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini are examples of how the same underlying advances can provide practical value when the product is designed around legitimate use cases and responsible safeguards.

A more responsible approach to AI

The most useful question is not whether an app uses AI. It is whether the product clearly explains what it does, gives users appropriate control, and considers foreseeable misuse.

Developers building AI-powered apps should think about privacy, consent, transparency, abuse prevention and how generated content is presented. Users should also be cautious when content looks unusually convincing, especially when it makes serious claims about a real person or event.

A useful rule of thumb

Powerful creative features are not automatically harmful. The risk increases when realistic synthetic content can be created about real people without meaningful consent, context or safeguards.
